Successful Berwickshire High School pupil Gaby Gracie is taking part in the south of Scotland round of the Rotary Club Young Chef competition.
The local competition at Berwickshire High School was organised by the youth service committee of the Rotary Club of Duns with assistance from Miss Mackay at the school’s home economics department.
Eleven pupils took part at that stage (seven girls and four boys) and had 90 minutes to prepare and serve a two-course meal for two costing under £10. Judge Katrina Reynolds from the Allanton Inn scored them on healthy ingredients, cooking technique and presentation.
Courtney Bell won and Gaby Gracey was runner-up.
Courtney served pan seared breast of pheasant in a fondant of sweet potato and a selection of vegetables, followed by caramelised pear and raisin Viennese tartlet with vanilla cream. Gaby prepared crab trimbale with avocado mousse and a seasonal salad with a sweet of raspberry flowers and raspberry coulis.
In the South-east Scotland round of the national competition at Penicuik last week Gaby was placed second behind Rachel Ward from Kelso and both go to a South of Scotland cook-off at Livingston in February.
