Dunbar Primary School’s Parent Council has beaten off stiff competition from across Scotland to be selected as a finalist at the Scottish Education Awards 2013.
The school’s Parent Council has been named as a finalist in the Parents as Partners in Learning Award category. The Parent Council focuses on young people and their education and supports pupils to achieve their best.
The Council is passionate about ensuring that the children’s experience of school is positive and is further enhanced by extra-curricular activities. There have been a number of initiatives led by the Parent Council which has transformed parental involvement in the school.
Jenny McAllister, Education Officer at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, has been shortlisted for the Teacher of the Year Award. Working at the Centre, Jenny deals with children of all age groups from nursery to high school and readily adapts her teaching style to suit all ages, without losing enthusiasm.
Jenny uses the natural environment to engage her students and educates them about sustainability and the environment. She makes learning fun and encourages pupils to share their learning with peers and family. She focuses on providing experiences for children to develop the attributes, knowledge and skills they need in life.
Jenny and the Dunbar Primary School Parent Council will join finalists at an awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Monday, June 10, where judges will unveil the winners of each category.
