East Lothian MP George Kerevan made his first visit to a major industrial facility and large employer in his constituency recently.

Mr Kerevan was shown around Dunbar Cement Plant just days after the company renamed itself Tarmac and revived the original blue circle logo, under the new ownership of CRH.

Mr Kerevan, the former journalist and economist who was voted in as an SNP MP in May’s general election, was given a tour of the plant, which is the currently the only cement manufacturing facility in Scotland, to see how the company has invested £1.5 million over recent months.

That investment has included refurbishing its kiln and the overhaul of a dust abatement system to reduce the number of particles entering the environment.

It is estimated to contribute over £8 million to the local economy each year.

Mr Kerevan also had the chance to meet a number of Tarmac’s 130 staff, across different departments of the business.

Devendra Mody, industrial director of Tarmac, said of the visit: “This was a great opportunity to show Mr Kerevan MP the latest investment we have made here.

“It is an exciting time for our business under the new ownership of CRH and we will continue to strive towards increasing productivity and enhancing sustainability.”

Mr Kerevan said: “This is the first time I have visited this plant and it was great to be able to see the significant investment the company is making in the plant and its people. I look forward to watching with interest as this plant continues to go from strength to strength.”
