A man wearing a ski mask has smashed the windows of a Berwick restaurant and draped it with a Union Jack.
The incident happened around 11.30am this morning, Monday, June 5,at Lazeez Lebanese restaurant on Golden Square.
It is understood the attack was in response to a social media video post which allegedly expressed support for terrorist atrocities around Europe.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police have been made aware of a video circulating online of a group of males discussing historic terror attacks. The video is believed to be around two years old and has recently been reposted in light of recent events in London and Manchester.
“The investigation is ongoing. One man, aged 37, has been arrested on suspicion of malicious communications.
“Following the circulation of the video, a premises on Golden Square, Berwick has been damaged by vandals. Enquiries are being carried out and police are urging people not to take the law into their own hands.
“If you have concerns about something you believe to be suspicious contact police on 101 and we will take appropriate action. Officers are carrying out patrols in the area to ease any further community tensions that may arise.”
