South Scotland MSP Claudia Beamish has added her support to a last-ditch campaign to protect local courts.
Following recommendations from the Scottish Court Service, sheriff courts in Peebles and Duns are due to close from January 2015. But the closure orders are due to be voted on by the Scottish Parliament’s justice committee on June 11.
Labour’s Keep Justice Local campaign is calling on members of the justice committee to support a motion to annul the orders and force the Scottish Government to reconsider the issue by bringing it back to the full parliament for a vote.
Commenting on the court closures, Labour’s Claudia Beamish MSP said: “I am deeply disappointed that the Scottish Government seems intent on rubber stamping these closures.
“I believe the closures will undermine local access to justice and that they ignore the particular needs of rural communities in the Borders.
“Given the widespread opposition that the Court Service’s proposals attracted I believe this decision should be subject to scrutiny by the whole parliament and not just the justice committee.”
