Jus Rol site has been bought by bakery group
Jus-Rol's Berwick factory has been bought by Country Style Foods, a family company that has bakeries in Yorkshire and north east England.
Production at Jus-Rol’s Berwick premises stopped last month, by which time the majority of the 265 workers on the site had been made redundant.
Now there is a glimmer of hope that new jobs will be created after Jus-Rol’s parent company General Mills sold the premises to Country Style Foods. General Mill’s closure of the Berwick factory has been part of an international restructuring programme undergone by the company.
A Country Style Foods company spokesperson described the Berwick factory as “a centre of excellence in pastry manufacture”.
Country Style Foods specialise in supplying supermarket in-store bakeries and bake-offs.
A spokesperson for Jus-Rol said: “We’re pleased that a successful business of Country Style Foods’ stature has chosen to enter into an agreement to take ownership of the Berwick site.
“We believe that this will provide the best possible outcome for the facility and the local community.”
Joe Wood, the managing director of Country Style Foods, added: “We’re delighted to be expanding our operations to Berwick and building upon the site’s heritage to supply high quality bakery products.”
Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan also welcomed the news: “I am delighted that the tradition of manufacturing baking products will continue at the former Jus-Rol site in Berwick, and that employment will continue at the site.
“This is really good news for Berwick and I look forward to welcoming Country Style Foods to our town!”
Jus-Rol moved from its home in Coldstream to Berwick in 1962 as the company grew and needed larger premises..The business has been sold a number of times, American food giant General Mills acquiring it in 2001.
