Jamie Nicolson has officially taken over as the 2016 Coldstreamer after the installation ceremony in the town’s Henderson Park last Friday.
After spending a year as Right Hand Man and learning the ropes from 2015 Coldstream James Balmbro and the 2015 Left Hand Man Colin Leifer, Jamie will now head Coldstream’s presence at Common Ridings across the Borders, his year in office culminating when he leads the horses and riders out of Coldstream on Flodden Day to the site of the 1513 battle between England and Scotland.
It was a bleak and cold Friday evening in Henderson Park but the hardy were undeterred and turned up to hear Coldstream Pipe Band and see Jamie receive the Coldstreamer’s sash and be installed as the 2016 Coldstreamer.
Jamie also had the support of a number of ex-Coldstreamers for the ceremony which involved Presenting Coldstream president Iain Dickson carrying out the official duties, and as an ex-Coldstreamer himself giving Jamie a few words of advice.
After being installed as Coldstreamer Jamie said: “Finally it’s here, the official start of the countdown to civic week begins.
“First I would like to thank the ex-Coldstreamers club for picking me to represent this fantastic town, I am absolutely honoured and privileged to be chosen as Coldstreamer for 2016, it’s been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and that dream is about to become reality.
“Thank you to the visiting principles that have turned up to support me tonight, it’s muchly appreciated. I’ve already made loads of friends among the Border principals, but am already looking forward to making more this coming year.
“Andrew, the ex-coldstreamers have made another excellent decision in appointing you, and I know you’ll do a great job.
“My advice to you over the next year is to take absolutely everything in, because you’ll be standing here before you know it.
“James, I’m sure everyone would agree that you carried out your duties exceptionally last year, you were a credit to the town, and I look forward to spending the next year with you. I’m sure you’ll keep myself and Andrew in line.
“I promise to carry out my duties to my greatest capabilities, wear my sash of office with the greatest pride and honour as set by all my predecessors.
“Thanks to the Presenting Coldstream association for their hard work Their continued hard work really is muchly appreciated. And a thanks in advance must go out to the Coldstream Pipe band who are always excellently turned out and sounding great.
His first outing on horseback, accompanied by his Right Hand Man, Andrew Guthrie, and Left Hand Man James Balmbro, will be to the Berwick Riding of the Bounds on May 1.
