Borders MP Michael Moore described the passing of the Grocery Code Adjudicator Bill into law last week as ‘an important boost for Borders farmers’.
The Groceries Code Adjudicator Act received Royal Assent last Thursday and will create a new body with the power to name and shame the ten biggest supermarkets if they mistreat their suppliers, with ultimate powers to impose fines.
Mr Moore said: “I have been campaigning for a Grocery Code Adjudicator to stand up for our local farmers for many years and I am extremely proud that the Lib Dems have delivered on this in Government. I work very closely with farmers and producers here in the Borders and I have heard countless stories of supermarket bullying which has forced them to accept unfair prices for their produce. The new ombudsman will strengthen farm businesses in the Borders and ensure they are getting a fairer deal.”
