Ian Middlemiss went to work as a crain operator for the last time last Thursday, after starting work for the Duns-based firm on February 1, 1975.

Although latterly a crane driver, Ian has done various jobs for John Thorburn and Sons over the years and has seen a steady expansion at the firm.

Now a one and a half acre site on a busy industrial estate, John Thorburn and Sons started out from a small blacksmiths smithy in 1947.

Many examples of John Thorburn and Sons' work can be seen on farms and industrial estates throughout Berwickshire, East Lothian, Northumberland and even further a field.

Stuart Thorburn, of John Thorburn and Sons, said Ian will be a much-missed member of the team: "He's done a good job for us over a long period of time and he will be very sorely missed," he commented.

"We're very grateful to him for all the work he's done for us."
