For the Primary 1 and Primary 7 pupils at Cockburnspath School the apprach of gala day, coming a week or two before the end of the school term, is met with great excitement and this year is no exception, with the Primary 6 pupils looking on closely as it will be their turn for the limelight next year.
The day starts at 1.30pm when the queen and her entourage make a regal procession through the village led by North Berwick Pipe Band, arriving at the village hall at 2pm ready for the crowning ceremony.
The crowning of Holly as the 2011 queen heralds the start of a fun-packed day for the community, and this year the honour of performing the crowning goes to June Armatage who has been a playground supervisor at Cockburnspath School for the past 25 years and is due to retire this year.
Queen Holly and her court will not have to worry about the vagaries of our summer weather, past experience has convinced organisers that holding the crowning ceremony in the village hall is the safer option.
Then come 2.30pm it’s off to the village green where the fun and games begin.
For the children there is a bouncy castle, quads, a giant slide, paint balling, face painting, children’s entertainer Chris Wish, and lots, lots more.
For adults there is a car boot sale, arts and crafts, Body Shop, plant stall, beer tent, strawberry tarts and Pimms.
Berwickshire girl band Where’s George (formerly known as Yours sincerely will be performing at around 3.30pm and there is plenty to see and do for everyone.
If there’s one thing that Berwickshire villages and town do well it’s community events and Cockburnspath can match any of them for community spiritt and the organisers have pulled out all the stops once again to ensure that the range of activities and entertainmetn on offer during the day.
All they need now is the sun to shine to make the day complete but even if the weather has other ideas, the organisers have plenty of experience behind them in making last minute tweaks to ensure a good time is had by all at the village’s 33rd Gala Day.
