This year is a special one for Eyemouth Herring Queen with its 70th crowning and the committee have decided to mark the occasion with a fond look back at festivals gone by.
And rather than a one-off slide show or a billboard of pictures, organisers have decided to keep up with the times with a commemorative DVD.
The DVD includes a minutes footage of every Herring Queen, featuring both stills and cine and video recordings, meaning that the committee’s archivists Wendy Lough and Elaine Peakman have had a busy time of things gathering everything together.
Plans for the DVD were first mooted before last year’s Herring Queen and work began on putting it all together in the autumn.
“The former queens themselves have been the biggest help,” Wendy told ‘The Berwickshire.’
“They’d obviously kept things from their crowning year so they were a big help as well as other locals.
“Some of the footage had sound, some didn’t so we decided to set all of the footage to music from the year of the crowning so we’ve got everything from Glen Miller to The Beatles to songs that have been big in the last few years.
“There’s a list of the songs in the cover of the DVD along with a roll of honour of all our queens.
“We decided to use the 70th logo on the front as it wouldn’t be fair to single out a particular queen.”
The DVD will premiere in front of the queens themselves on Friday, July 25, the night before this year’s Herring Queen festival gets underway.
And what an occasion it looks set to be with this year’s queen Ailsa Landels sharing the spotlight with many other Herring Queens, some of whom are travelling to Eyemouth from the other side of the world.
Among them is 1963 queen Sandra Aitchison who is bringing her family over from Texas for the occasion.
Many guest houses and holiday homes in the area are already booked up as the 70th crowning also coincides with Homecoming 2014.
“It should be one to remember,” Wendy added.
