Staff at Greenvale AP’s Duns site have helped to raise an incredible £64,677 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Over the past two years, employees at this and eight other Greenvale AP sites across the country have run a variety of fundraising events to contribute to the donation that will go to help more than 350 families affected by cancer.

Greenvale AP staff organised a whole range of fundraising events to bring in a total of £30,000, which was then topped up by Greenvale AP to the magnificent total of £64,677. Fundraising events at the Duns site included a sponsored head shave, a ‘Big Fish’ day, producing a calendar featuring staff photographs and running a tea and cake fundraising extravaganza for the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

Presenting the company with a Macmillan Corporate Challenge Award, the charity’s fundraising manager Aileen Stewart said: “There are a lot of hidden costs to cancer especially if the person with cancer can’t work because of their illness.

“With the funds raised by Greenvale AP we are able to help people with the cost of getting to hospital for vital treatment, with their heating bills and with everyday things like replacing washing machines.

“If you are fighting cancer you don’t want to have to worry about these sorts of things and Macmillan is here to help in all sorts of ways.”

Greenvale’s chief executive Angus Armstrong said: “We are delighted to have worked with Macmillan Cancer Support as our staff nominated charity for the past two years.

“They do invaluable work and we are proud to donate this money to such a worthwhile cause.

“I have been so impressed by the enthusiasm, imagination and hard work of all our staff, who have worked together to raise this magnificent amount of money!”

Greenvale AP staff normally vote for a new charity each year but having supported Macmillan Cancer Support throughout 2010 they voted for them to remain as their chosen charity for 2011 too.

In recent years the company has sadly lost some long serving members of staff to cancer and some employees have seen family and close friends affected by the disease so the charity holds special importance for Greenvale AP employees.

Macmillan Cancer Support works to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. They provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support and push for better cancer care.

One in three of us will get cancer in our lifetime and two million people are currently living with cancer so the organisation plays a hugely important role in helping people with cancer and their families.

Greenvale AP handles 600,000 tonnes of potatoes every year and supplies major retailers and food manufacturers. Greenvale AP is a vertically integrated potato business; it breeds and develops new potato varieties, grows seed and ware potatoes, washes, selects and packs fresh potatoes for the retail, wholesale and food service sectors and peels and slices/dices potatoes for the food ingredient and ready meal sectors through its Shropshire based Swancote Foods business.

As well as working together to raise money for Macmillan, Greenvale AP takes its community responsibility very seriously. Each site works closely with a range of local organisations to give something back to their own area and local communities.
