Memorial beacons were lit on St Abbs Head and the Farne Islands to mark St Cuthbert’s links to the area.
St Cuthbert was known as the ‘fire of the north’ and a series of events have been held under that banner.
The St Abb’s Head beacon was on a hill close to the lighthouse and there was a guided walk from Kirk Hill to the site led by Daniel Rhodes, National Trust for Scotland archaeologist. There was a good turnout, about 12 on the walk and then over 20 people for the beacon. Sadly the visibility was such that those present were unable to see the Longstone lighthouse let alone the beacon on the Farnes!
