The principals for this year’s Duns Summer Festival were announced to the townsfolk at the traditional installation ceremony held in the Market Square on Friday.
A large crowd turned out for the ceremony which saw the 2016 Duns Reiver Euan Reed and Reiver’s Lass Jade Whellans officially sashed by festival president Doug Redpath.
This year’s right hand attendants will be Josh Herbert and Melissa Redpath and all four were presented with their tradition red and black rosettes by festival chairman Ann Lindsay.
Euan said he had thoroughly enjoyed his role as attendant to last year’s Reiver Darren Aitchison but said it was a great honour to be installed as Reiver. He added: “With my Reiver’s Lass Jade and out attendants Josh and Melissa, I am looking forward to representing the town of Duns at the common ridings and festivals throughout the Borders.
“I can’t wait to carry the town standard and I will endeavour to carry out my duties to the best of my ability and keep up the high standards set by those before me.”
Reiver’s Lass Jade added: “It is a tremendous honour to be Reiver’s Lass and follow in the footsteps of my mum who was Reiver’s Lass in 1990 and I am looking forward to representing Duns at the other Borders festivals.”
Reiver Euan then drew the names of the Wynsome Mayde elect and her maydes. The 2016 Wynsome Mayde will be Lauren Reid and her maydes of honour will be Olivia Jack, Robyn Mccue Knowles, Kaitlyn Percival and Jessica Taylor.
Last year’s Reiver’s Lass Stacey Wilson presented Reiver’s Lass Jade with a bouquet.
The installation was followed by discos for both youngsters and adults in the White Swan Hotel.
On Saturday morning a coffee morning was held in the Duns Parish Church Hall at which thge names of the Wynsoime Mayde’s Court were announced.
In the evening the Reiver’s Gathering in the White Swan Hotel was a complete sell-out.
This year’s Festival will be held from July 3-9 and the Reiver’s colours are pearl grey and petunia.
