Duns Swimming Pool is celebrating 18 years since it was reopened by Berwickshire Recreation Education Sports Trust (BREST) following its closure in February 1997.

Reaching this birthday shows that a small rural community like Duns can not only manage to retain its pool but can improve it too.

The building has been extended and plant improved to provide a real community facility which caters for much more than just swimming.

With its directors drawn from the local community, BREST has always put the needs of local people at the heart of what it does, responding to changing demand. A recent example is shown by the introduction of a session for primary school children to fit in with the introduction of the new asymmetric week in local schools.

In addition to the high quality swimming lesson programme taught by ASA qualified swimming teachers there are sessions suitable for all ages and abilities from babies to seniors and from people with a disability to competitive swimmers.

All are very welcome at Duns Swimming Pool and in the Guy Roberts Room where there is a good variety of classes on offer.

The pool’s success is due in no small part to the commitment and dedication of pool manager Kirsty Inkpen and her loyal team of staff, both present and past, who always go “the extra mile” for their customers.

Kirsty, who has managed the pool for the last 18 years said: “I could not have wished for a better job. I love what I do and I am so proud of what we have achieved over the past 18 years.

“We have a great group of directors, wonderful staff and more importantly the support of our members and customers from Duns and the surrounding areas. We pride ourselves on our high standards of cleanliness and friendly customer service. My staff and I just want everyone to enjoy themselves.”

BREST is proud to have “come of age” and would like to thank SBC, local and national funding providers and all its members for their support.

A special party to celebrate the 18th Birthday will be held on November 21 in the Volunteer Hall, Duns, with a live band and a hog roast. To get your tickets email
