A GROUP of charity fundraisers in Duns are planning a series of events in October to raise money for Prostate Cancer and St Columba’s Hospice.
Knowing family and friends who have suffered prostate cancer spurred the group into action, and they are hoping that members of the public and local business will help them raise much needed funds for both causes.
A spokesman for the group said: “As everyone is well aware, prostate cancer has become more common and we would like to firstly raise awareness of the condition and secondly raise funds to help with research into this type of cancer.
“Our aim is to involve the public and local business in sponsoring our events.”
Firstly, during the month of October several ‘well-kent’ faces have agreed to grow beards and moustaches during what they are calling ’Moctober’.
They are hoping to attract sponsorship before having their facial hair removed in a grand ‘Turkish shave’ to be held at the Black Bull Hotel in Duns on Sunday, October 30.
One Black Bull customer, well known for his flowing beard, has agreed to take part as long as he gets a mention in the ‘Berwickshire News’ and is first in the barber’s chair for his shave! Well done Harry Harrison!
Also on that day a sponsored Rally Car Pull will be held, starting at 12.30pm, from the former home of the late, great Jim Clark, to the Jim Clark Memorial Trophy Room in Newtown Street, Duns - a total of 8.5 miles.
The route will take in Crosshill, Chirnside, and the last section, from Aitken-Walker’s garage in Duns, will be led by Duns Pipe Band.
They are hoping teams of six will come forward to pull the car. Each team will pull the car for half a mile and hopefully the teams will also be able to attract sponsorship.
For further details, or to register a team, contact Pam at the Black Bull Hotel on 01361 883379 or Billy on 07753428513.
The spokesman added: “We intend having two advertising trailers which will be in Duns Market Square in the weeks running up to the event and on the day itself.
“We are inviting businesses to sponsor this great cause by providing us with an A3 poster, promoting their business, which will be put on the advertising trailers.
“For businesses wishing to make use of this advertising the cost will be £50. However, smaller donations will happily be accepted.
“Members of the public can also have their names put on the trailer for a minimum of a £5 donation.”
The ‘Big Shave’ will start in the Black Bull at 3pm following the Car Pull when there will also be a Hog Roast (kindly donated by Fairbairns Butchers) and you can enjoy a roll and a pint, or glass of wine (kindly donated by Alan and Pam Turner of the Black Bull), for £6.
All proceeds will go to Prostate Cancer and St Columba’s Hospice.
Members of the public wishing to make a donation you can do by visiting the Royal Bank of Scotland, Duns branch (account number 00694077).
