Businesses in the Borders are being encouraged to sign up to a free messaging service, which can provide them with specific business-related information from crime warnings to changes in business legislation and severe weather warnings.

SB Alert is an extension of Scottish Borders Council’s highly successful resilient communities initiative, launched in October, and provides a multi-agency communication and alert system. People can sign up at

It is the first project of its kind to be rolled out across a local authority area in Scotland and is supported by a local partnership which includes Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and NHS Borders. Other contributors to the scheme include the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, British Transport Police, Shopwatch, Action Fraud and Farmwatch.

Alerts can be provided by phone, text or email, as well as regular newsletters. The type of alert received can be chosen when signing up, ensuring that only relevant information is received.

Jim Fraser, SBC’s emergency planning officer, said: “Businesses no matter what location they are based in, or their respective sector, can benefit greatly from the information disseminated through SB Alert.”
