Council customers’ direct debits

SCOTTISH Borders Council is taking steps to improve ways for customers to pay their council invoices.

From April 2012, they can settle their invoices by direct debit on the 15th of each month.

This is the quickest and easiest way for people to pay their invoices and the Direct Debit guarantee means they are protected from mistakes at all times.

Setting up direct debit payments is simple and quick and can be done by calling 01835 826784 or visiting

SBC will be mailing customers who currently pay by standing order to invite them to change to direct debit over the next few months. Eventually SBC hopes to phase out standing orders.

Jenni Craig, SBC’s head of customer services explained: “I would encourage as many people as possible to take the opportunity to pay their council invoices in this way. It can be set up very easily and the money is paid automatically so they never have to worry about missing a payment.

“Details of the new arrangements will be publicised over the next couple of weeks and staff in the collection and recovery team and SBC contact centres will be advising regular payers of the changes.”
