The post office and village shop was nominated for an SCA accolade back in 2007 in the category of Best Rural Retailer and this time it’s been shortlisted for Best Village Shop/Post Office alongside Kirkmichael Village Shop in Perthshire and Ardfern Village Store, Lochgilphead, Argyll.
In 2007, two other Borders businesses made the shortlist but this time around Cockburnspath Post Office is the only one to make the final of the awards, dubbed the ‘rural Oscars’.
Ross Montague of the Scottish Countryside Alliance commented: “We were delighted with the quality of the nominations to this years’ SCA Awards. Across the categories we had a tough job to select the finalists from the spread and variety of worthy entries.
“The businesses that have now reached the finals are those we believe are the best-of-the-best from the pile of entries. Each finalist will now have a visit from one of our judges, with some of the visits carried out anonymously, to help us chose the winners.”
Manager of Cockburnspath Post Office, John Hubball, is still in his first year of business so he said the nomination came as a shock.
“To get nominated for an award like this was a nice surprise. I think it’s a lot to do with the support service we offered to people during all the snow last winter. We’d take parcels in for them, help to get things to them etc.”
John will find out if the Post Office has been successful in February.
