As work continues on its new home, Coldingham Post Office has been revealed as one of 48 post offices throughout Scotland to benefit from funding from the Scottish Government.
The Post Office, which at the moment is housed in a portable cabin close next to the village hall, will soon have a new home in the Luckenbooth Centre, currently being converted from a public toilet block.
And the facility’s new era has been boosted to the tune of £16,000 courtesy of the Government’s Post Office Diversification Fund which is given grants of up to £25,000 to post offices in 24 areas nationwide.
The funding has been given a warm welcome by Liberal Democrat MSP Jim Hume who told ‘The Berwickshire News’: Scottish Liberal Democrats worked very hard during the last Scottish budget in February to secure the extension of the vital Post Office diversification fund. This was a key demand during budget negotiations with the SNP.
“I am really pleased to see that the hard work achieved by colleagues in the last Parliament has paid off, and this fund has now become available for the second year to post offices in the Borders and across the entire south region.
“Post Offices are at the heart of rural and far flung communities. This fund makes it possible for Post Offices to sell a range of other goods, safeguarding the longevity of many which would otherwise be up for closure.”
The nationwide grants were also welcomed by Post Office Ltd’s Managing Director, Paul Vennells, who commented: “Post Office Ltd is delighted that the Scottish Government is continuing to support SubPostmasters through this fund. This will help SubPostmasters in Scotland to diversify and build footfall in their retail businesses, which helps the local economy and viability of their overall business including the post office within it.
“Post Office branches throughout Scotland provide a service recognised by their customers as vital to each community and to the Scottish economy as a whole.”
In March 2011 the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth announced the deployment of £1 million for the Post Office diversification scheme in 2011-12. This followed on the success of the previous £1 million scheme for 2010-11.
