After a chilly start, Saturday stayed fair for Westruther’s annual Flower Show and Sports Day.
A good growing season produced some nice vegetable entries for Doug Kellett from Galashiels to judge. Although there were fewer cut flowers than usual there were still some beautiful blooms on display.
There were good entries in the baking section, including 13 chocolate cakes! These and the handicrafts, flower arranging and children’s artwork were judged by Roni Smith, Annie Jones and Helen Donald of Mellerstain SWRI.
Before the show opened there was a good crowd of adults and children taking part in the sports, organised by Mark Conington. There were various novelty races, a tug-of-war and caber tossing and the handicap running race was won by Alexander Fraser.
Westruther SWRI president, Kate Hankey, introduced local resident Lynne Morgan-Hastie and asked her to open the show and present the prizes.
Lynne asked her daughters, Amelia and Lucy, and their friends to open the show with a song they had composed based on the ditty “Roses are Red”. Three year old Flora Locke presented Lynne with a gift.
