Coldstream Community Centre is at the heart of community life in the town and it is about to enter a new phase of its reincarnations since the building was bought by local residents in 1998.

The community trust that runs the centre has changed its status to a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), which should be an advantage when applying for grants, and also gives greater protection for all trust members.

And with a new development committee section of the trust they are starting to look beyond the four walls of the centre - a community gym, community energy project, and new events such as a beerfest and the Borders Walking Festival are all currently being worked on.

Community centre chairman Alex Thomson said: “Our Community Centre in Coldstream has been a large presence on the High Street since the townsfolk purchased it in 1999.

“There have been plenty of ups and a few downs but for many it is at the heart of the community and this has been achieved by dedication and hard work by a great many people.

“Now, the centre is moving into a new era to maintain and develop the facilities inside the centre, as well as contributing to the community outside the centre.

“A new style of trust has been formed, which it designed to improve our chances of future funding and this was approved by the charities regulator in August 2014.

“Coldstream Community Trust now needs members from the community to demonstrate our commitment to the community.

“We also need helpers and volunteers to add to the Friends of Coldstream Community Centre who already make a valuable contribution.

“We are holding an informal Open Day on Sunday, December 14, at 2.30pm in the centre for everyone to hear about current and future activities.

“Come and have a lazy Sunday afternoon with tea, coffee and biscuits being served. Cheese and wine will also be available - all with the complements of the Centre.

“Come and give us YOUR ideas and thoughts - we want to hear what you think about how we develop YOUR community centre.

“This is a really good opportunity to generate interest in our community as a whole and the centre in particular.

“In many ways I am appealing to people in Coldstream and the surrounding area for your help to take this new era forward.

“I look forward to seeing you on December 14.”
