The driver of the vehicle and her passenger, who were travelling from Newcastle to Edinburgh, were aware they’d hit the animal close to a roundabout near Morrisons in Berwick, and pulled in at a layby three miles up the road at Lamberton, to inspect the damage.

They noticed smoke coming from the bonnet and as the women got out and walked away the Vauxhall Astra’s engine compartment set alight.

The Fire Service were called out at around 11pm, crews from Eyemouth and Berwick attended at the scene and were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

The car’s front end was completely destroyed as a result of the fire but its rear wasn’t badly destroyed. The Astra was removed from the scene at 12.45am.

It is believed that the force of the impact when the car hit the deer damaged the car’s electrics, causing it to burst into flames.
