Torness power station’s six new apprentices have started their careers at HMS Sultan – the Portsmouth based training centre - after a team building week in the Lake District.
The new recruits, Jack Young, (18, from Berwick), Dayne Purvis (17, from Berwick), Liam Gray (20, from Berwick), Jack Withers (16, from Longniddry), Zach Szemis, (19, from Edinburgh) and James Forrest (17, from Dunbar), joined up with 53 other apprentices.
The Lakes week was the culmination of a gruelling recruitment process which started last autumn when hundreds of applications came in for the positions, after tests and interviews the apprentices were finally chosen.
Gillian Farquhar, Torness apprentice training co-ordinator, said: “We spend the autumn going into schools and colleges talking about the apprenticeship scheme and encouraging applications.
“Spending their first week in the Lakes is always good fun and allows them to form friendship bonds which will only develop while they are away in Portsmouth.”
After the final six were chosen earlier this year the apprentices and their families were taken to see HMS Sultan – the Portsmouth-based training facility where the apprentices will spend their first two years.
