Round-up from Borders and north Northumberland.


AT their weekly Primestock Sale at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1702 lambs and 478 young sheep and ewes.

Brighter weather conditions curbed numbers nationwide, with all major outlets operating selling vendors received returns well in advance of early week markets.

Last Tuesday John Swan Ltd, St Boswells conducted the official Scottish Regional Sale of Jacob Sheep on behalf of the Jacob Sheep Society Ltd.

The overall champion was a ram lamb from Mrs H Baillie, Hyndshaw, which sold for 1200gns to Mrs A Simpson, Whitedale, East Yorks.

Shearling rams sold to 900gns from M/s Connor and Dalrymple to Mrs Fletcher, Blessington Co. Wicklow.

Ewes sold to 200gns from Mr Reilly Deer Park; Gimmers sold to 840gns from Mrs Baillie, Hyndshaw and 580gns Miss Kendall, Longdales; Ewe lambs sold to 650gns Mrs Baillie, Hyndshaw.

Averages:- Five ewes 136.50; 31 gimmers 212.03; 23 ewe lambs 139.01; nine ram lambs 329; seven shearling rams 403.50.


AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 67 clean cattle, 42 OTM cattle, 1,917 spring lambs and 668 ewes.

Bullocks (35) averaged 208p per kg (+1.5p on the week). Heifers (30) averaged 210p per kg (+0.4p on the week). Two young bulls averaged 208p per kg (n/c on the week) and 42 beef type OTM cattle averaged 142.9p per kg (-3.1p on the week).

The 1,917 spring lambs averaged 185.7p per kg (+6.8p on the week) and 668 ewes averaged £66.34 (-£1.76 on the week).

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 42 prime cattle, nine young bulls, 27 over 30 month cattle, 3,717 prime lambs and 7,138 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A smaller plainer show of prime cattle saw trade a shade easier but still topped at 225.5p, 221.5p, 218.5p, 217.5p for Limousin bullocks all shown by A and W J Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen. Limousin heifers sold to 215.5p from J and N Blaylock and Son, Hallburn and purchased by Mr J Little.

Young bulls met a buoyant trade and more numbers required. Top price to 216.5p twice both from J and P Routledge and Son, Netherton.

The 27 OTM cattle sold to 185.5p, 178.5p, 173.5p for Galloways from J Robertson and Son, Becks Farm.

Prime lambs were a similar show of better quality, trade was marvellous throughout with an overall average of 200p being 18p up on the week. Numbers were short of requirements with extra buyers operating.

Top was 225p per kilo for Texels from Gallowberry.

Lightweight lambs continued to be in strong demand with a top price of 219p for Texels from Rockcliffe Cross. Top price per head was £78.80 for Texels from Rockcliffe Cross.

Cast ewes and rams were a similar entry with all the usual buyers present, trade again excellent at similar prices on the week.


DURING the week end August 10, Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 105 prime cattle including 36 cows, 3,104 prime lambs, 316 ewes and 56 cows and calves.

Cattle supplies showing signs of tightening with trade firming particularly for well-bred suckler kinds. Aberdeen Angus cross steers from Bonjedward Mill, Jedburgh, and West Mains sold to 370p per kg and £1,520.70 per head. Galloway cross heifers from Hedgeley Farms, Powburn, sold to 340p per kg. Organic cows from Tullochallum, Keith, sold to £1,295 and 345p per kg. Young bulls from Cairndinnis, Haddington, sold to £1,204 and averaged £1,085 per head.

Prime lambs were forward in larger numbers with trade firming all week. Best quality lambs sold to 420p per kg from Hassendean, Hawick, and Syminton Mains, Stow. Texel crosses from Upper Chatto, Hownam, sold to 415p per kg. Organic lambs sold to 420p per kg with heavy weights to £96.50 Castlehills, Berwick.

Ewes dearer on the week with pure Texel’s reaching £130. Suffolk ram also to £130. Blackfaced ewes £59.50 and mules to £86.50.
