THIS year’s terrible weather has led many farmers to experience soil structural problems which, if left unchecked, can have a significant impact on crop growth and productivity.
SAC Consulting is holding an event near Jedburgh on December 6 that will offer farmers guidance on how to assess their soils and deal with problems.
At the free workshop at Upper Nisbett Farm, SRUC soil specialist Bruce Ball will draw on his 35 years of experience to show farmers how they can visually assess their soils for problem signs.Bruce is asking local farmers to dig out a slice of their soil and bring it along for a structural assessment. They should dig out a slice of soil to spade depth (about six inches thick), put it on a tray or stiff board and in a thick poly bag to keep it intact. Problem soils are welcomed!
