Berwickshire MP Michael Moore is supporting local fishermen in their demands for urgent action from the Scottish Government on discards.
At a meeting in Eyemouth harbour on Saturday, fishermen and harbour trust officials expressed frustration that the details of the discard scheme are not yet known.
They outlined that they need clarification about how they should store ‘discards’ on their vessels and at the harbour as soon as possible.
Another issue raised at the meeting was the treatment of shellfish waste by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The cost of disposing of a natural waste product to landfill has been increasing and is affecting the profitability of local processing firms.
Mr Moore has written to Scottish Fisheries Minister Richard Lochhead about both issues, requesting ‘urgent clarification’ of the new rules.
