MP Michael Moore has praised the Chancellor’s spring budget, saying it helps support “families, pensioners and savers across the Borders.”

Specific announcements in this year’s Budget include an £800 tax cut for 39,090 people in the Borders.

Mr Moore said: “This is an important Budget for families, pensioners and savers across the Borders. The Liberal Democrats in government are providing further tax cuts for people on low incomes, more affordable childcare for families and continuing the freeze on fuel duty, which is important in a rural area like ours.

“Already the Liberal Democrats have delivered a tax cut of £700 for low and middle income families locally. I welcome the Chancellor’s announcement to raise the threshold further to £10,500, because it will take even more people in the Borders out of paying income tax altogether.

“This Budget will also help pensioners and savers with an overhaul of the support given to them. Giving people control over the money they have saved in their pension ‘pots’. We are removing the need for people to be tied into buying annuities. They will have access to, and control over, their money.

“I am delighted that the UK Government is to make childcare more affordable by providing financial assistance to over 3,000 families in the Borders. It will help parents and provide security for their families.

“Also, living in a rural area where cars are an essential form of transport, the further freezing of fuel duty is welcome news for motorists in the Borders.

“Now that the economy is getting back on track, these further announcements are very welcome. However, the Coalition Government must continue to do everything it can to support the economic recovery and put it on a long-term sustainable footing for the future.”
