A new full-colour illustrative map that shows visitors where nine of the big houses in the Borders are located is the latest guide to attract tourists to the region.
The map is the work of Big Houses in the Scottish Borders, a group that formed in 2012 to work together on jointly marketing their visitor attractions to collectively raise the region’s profile.
Designed and illustrated by two Borders professionals, Winnie Stewart and Diane Lumley, it features Mellerstain House, Gunsgreen House, Thirlestane Castle, Floors Castle, Neidpath Castle, Abbotsford, Traquair, Bowhill House and Country Estate and Monteviot House.
New illustrations of the grand houses and castles are combined with a custom scale map of the region showing house locations, road numbers, Borders railway and stations, cycle and footpaths and other places of interest. It also includes visitor information for each of the castles or houses featured.
Helen Currie, chair of the group said: “This was a wonderful opportunity to join together and put each of our fantastic properties on a combined map.”
VisitScotland regional director Doug Wilson said: “The launch of this new map in 2017, the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, demonstrates a real commitment to further enhancing our region’s tourism offering and attracting more visitors to delve into the past to discover some of the hidden gems.”
