NHS Borders has taken to publishing its A&E waiting times weekly in a bid to be more open about its operations.
Attendances at the Borders General Hospital A&E department increased significantly in December, compared with the same period in 2013 and NHS Borders medical director Dr Sheena MacDonal admitted: “At the end of last year we were missing our targets.
“We had dipped because of the sheer volume of people coming through the service and a 127% increase in sickness absence in December.”
In January 2197 patients were treated in A&E, 89.7% of which were seen within four hours - above the Scotland average of 85.4% for the month.
Over the year to end of January 2015 95.3% of patients were seen within four hours within NHS Borders, once again above the Scotland average of 91.3%.
“Our staff continue to work exceptionally hard to care for our patients and we thank them for their tremendous dedication,” said and NHS Borders spokesperson.
