The traditional blessing of the nets took place on the Tweed at Paxton yesterday evening.
Bill Landale, locum minister for Hutton, Fishwick and Paxton, gave the blessing before the nets were put to their first use this season.
In times past, the ceremony would have marked the start of salmon fishing on the river, but these days the salmon fishing season is negotiated by anglers and conservation groups. The first passes netted a few trout, the first fish going to the minister as tradition dictates.
Minister Bill Landale said: “It’s wonderful to be involved in such a tradition that is not just religious, it’s holy. It connects us to the whole of creation.”
