Borders MP Michael Moore has welcomed OFCOM’s commitment to tackle the availability of high speed broadband, smart phone data and mobile phone coverage in the Borders.

Meeting MPs and peers in Westminster this week, OFCOM chief executive, Ed Richards, recognised the urgency to complete the rollout of these services in rural areas.

Under the new 4G licences for mobile phone services, operators are obliged to provide 98% coverage indoors, which should equate to 99% outdoor coverage.

“When 4G has been rolled out it will be transformational for the Borders - providing data speeds and call coverage which will finally allow our area to compete with other parts of the country on a fair basis,” said Mr Moore who will meet with OFCOM representatives to ensure they deliver on the commitments made.
