Keen chess players from both sides of the border pitted their wits against Berwick’s Martin Mitchell, who had competed in three British Chess Championships, in February 1990.
Martin took on members of the recently reformed Berwick Chess Club at an open event in The Maltings.
His performance was almost perfect, winning 20 of the 21 games that he played simultaneously.
Only Nicole van Overmeir of Allanton managed to defeat Martin on the day.
Martin is pictured above facing off against Les Lawson of Blanerne, near Duns.
