The picture above shows fishermen at Cove Harbour tending to their traditional nets.
The photograph was sent in to The Berwickshire News back in 1990 by Mrs Fairbairn of Cockburnspath, who noted at that time that it had been taken in the days the lifeboat was paddled out to rescues. Eleven men from Cove lost their lives in the East Coast Fishing Disaster of 1881. The natural harbour at Cove was improved in 1831 by the building of a breakwater. Access is via a tunnel, excavated by hand, and the pick marks are still clear to see.
