This week’s old photograph from the Berwickshire News archives features a view of the old Toll House at Cheeklaw, near Duns.

It was originally sent in to the paper by Cecil Lindsay of Duns.

Toll houses were the accommodation for a toll collector by a toll gate on the old roads.

Many were built by turnpike trusts in the 18th and 19th centuries, and by 1840 it was estimated there were more than 5,000 across the country.
