Work begins on the new pig breeding facility near Cornhill.

JSR Genetics Ltd, an East Yorkshire farming company, are currently constructing the 200 place boar stud near Cornhill.

It will be home to some of the top performing pigs in the country from December this year, and will become part of the network of strategically placed AI (artificial insemination) studs which supply JSR Genetics customers across the UK.

Using local contractors on the groundworks and the build, the construction of the new unit will create six new jobs in the area, in stockmanship and also in the laboratory which will be contained within the unit.

Speaking about the new stud, Steve Cook, AI production manager for JSR Genetics who will oversee the day-to-day stud operations said: “JSR Genetics is an established and well-known name in the pig genetics industry, both in the UK and worldwide.

“By creating a base in the Borders we will be able to better serve our customers in the northern region, whilst also creating fantastic job opportunities with a company at the forefront of AI technology within the industry.”

The first position to be recruited to is head stockperson, a key role with responsibility for boar welfare on the unit and the supervision of other staff working with the pigs.

As the new stud gets up to capacity the other roles will be filled, hopefully by local people keen to build a career in this lesser-known area of pig production.

Because the site is on the edge of Flodden Field, the site of the 1513 Battle of Flodden between the English and Scottish, archaeologists maintained a watching brief during the groundworks phase. However, no artefacts were uncovered.

Anyone interested in the job opportunities at the Callerburn stud should go to the JSR Genetics website as vacancies will be advertised there, as well as in The Berwickshire News, as they become available. They are currently looking for one full time stockperson and two part time stock persons - the closing date for applications being October 31.

Working in partnership with Topigs Norsvin, JSR Genetics Ltd is now the leading pig genetics company in the UK, marketing breeding stock and semen around the globe.

Through international franchises, the JSR name is globally recognised in the field of pig genetics.

The supply of technical support and pure lines to global partners has ensured the JSR name is synonymous with quality pig genetics across four continents.

The company’s range of licensed boar studs across the UK provide a fast track to genetic improvement with semen available from the highest merit boars, backed by the reassurance of total bio-security through the renowned JSR Company Health Scheme.

They have continued to develop a number of highly successful partnerships within the pigmeat supply chain, such as supermarket chains Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, as part of its competitive strategy to ensure that its customers remain successful in the rapidly changing market place.
