Mr Smail, an experienced chairman with four decades of expertise in national and international publishing, will advise the Institute - the UK’s only professional body offering recognised, formal qualifications in International Trade - on policy and corporate governance.
Mr Smail commented: “The Institute’s unique role in setting and raising professional standards in international trade management and export practice is more vital than ever as interest in international trade continues to grow.
“Equipping business with the relevant knowledge and skills to ensure success has likewise taken on unprecedented importance and I’m looking forward to enhancing and expanding the Institute’s reputation at home and abroad.”
Mr Smail, who has been a Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland since 1992, was elected to the Executive Committee by IOE council members and is committed to a three-year tenure in the role. The IOE is a registered charity whose patron is the HRH The Duke of Kent.
