What a wonderful day for a picnic

Anyone out and about in Berwick, Paxton or Eyemouth on Saturday would have been forgiven they’d stepped into a time warp thanks to Val and Alan Knowles.

The Eyemouth couple are no strangers to dressing up in Georgian garments thanks to their involvement with Paxton House, and warm sunshine greeted them and others as they spent the day enjoying pursuits from the era on both sides of the border.

Their day started with a leisurely stroll around the walls in Berwick before they made the short trip to Paxton house for a tour of the gardens and some light refreshment.

With the son beating down on them, it was then time for Val, Alan and their party to travel east to the coast for their final calling point of the day, Eyemouth.

Saturday’s weather was ideal for some al fresco dining so the group duly obliged and enjoyed a hearty picnic on the lawn in front of the famous building.

And then to burn off the treats they’d devoured a few ofthe party then made their way across the water for a walk around the harbour, attracting the glances of some interested onlookers in the process.

“We tend to get one of three reactions,” Val commented.

“Some people look straight passed us; others are really enthusiastic and want to know what we’re doing while others don’t know what to think!

“We couldn’t have asked for better weather on the day. Wearing big hats we were protected from the sun and despite all of our layers we weren’t that hot.

“My feet were hurting at the end of it though!”
