Fig, the long haired Jack Rusell and Matilda the Norfolk terrier, beat off all competition for the role of Toto in Berwick Operatic Society’s forthcoming production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.
The society also has its two Dorothys - 14 year old Maddy Cawthorne and 15 year old Georgina Faed who will each do three performances each- and it’s all systems go for rehearsals now, ready for the show’s run in March 2015.
At the Toto auditions 14 dogs, of all sizes, shapes and breeds - from Max the Labradoodle to Poco the Chalkie (cross between a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire terrier) were put through their paces by Georgina and Berwick Opera’s Lisa Summers, during a very entertaining afternoon.
Some proved too stage struck and hid under a chair, others were just confused about what was going on, but Fig and Matilda took it all in their stride, proving they have the temperament needed for their starring role.
Before the auditions Lisa said: “It will be very tongue in cheek and we are going to have Dorothy singing to the dogs on the day of the auditions to see if the dogs can cope with the singing! And a “call Toto” section to see which dogs come to Dorothy when she calls them.”
However, while Georgina did sing to the dogs, and to be fair most seemed to enjoy it, ‘call Toto’ proved a step too far with so many dogs in the room at the same time!
Now the main characters are in place Berwick Opera Society cast will now be following the yellow brick road to the Maltings stage in March next year, hoping not to be upstaged by Fig and Matilda!
