Theatre in Schools Scotland is bringing two award-winning, internationally recognised productions to Eyemouth Primary School later this month.

This new initiative was established to support and develop the provision of theatre in Scotland’s schools, with the aim of ensuring that every child in Scotland receives, at their nursery or school, a minimum of one performing arts production, per year.

The initiative, is initially a pilot project, which will expand over the next three years, exploring different models for touring theatre into schools. It is sponsored by The Scottish Salmon Company and Arts Business Scotland and supported by Borders LIVE Touring, Live Borders and Scottish Borders Council’s Children and Young Peoples Services.

This year Theatre in Schools Scotland is visiting around 25 local authorities and over 15,000 pupils in over 36 primary schools will enjoy performances of ‘Martha’, by Catherine Wheels Theatre Company and ‘Shopping for Shoes’ by Visible Fictions.

‘Martha’ is directed by Gill Robertson and designed by Karen Tennent. The cast includes Hannah Donaldson and Chris Alexander. ‘Shopping for Shoes’ was written by Tim Crouch, is directed by Douglas Irvine and designed by Mark Leese. The cast includes Sarah McCardie.

Theatre in Schools Scotland will be visiting Eyemouth Primary School on Wednesday, September 28, and Wednesday, October 5.

Kirsty Taylor, performing arts co-ordinator, Live Borders, said: “Live Borders, Borders LIVE Touring project and Scottish Borders Council’s Children and Young People’s Services are delighted to support the National Theatre of Scotland’s Theatre in Schools Scotland initiative, bringing two high quality, world class professional productions to children in schools in the Borders. Without this initiative the children in these Borders schools would not have had this opportunity otherwise.”
