Hemelvaart Bier Café in Ayton has in three short months established a reputation as a venue for excellent live music.

It has attracted quality bands with a national reputation such as Prides, Cattle & Cane and, just recently, Seafret.

Now this small, intimate continental-style beer café aims to do the same for the world of comedy. A regular monthly comedy night starts on Sunday, November 22 with Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival 2015 Winner Phil Jerrod and his show, ‘Neanderthal’.

“You can see why Phil Jerrod was snapped up by the agents at comedy kingmakers Off The Kerb. From the second he steps on stage he radiates ‘confident comic’. Bang: impact. There’s a hint of the oddball to him, mainly on account of that beard, but lift it up and there’s a comedian underneath with potentially mass appeal.” (Chortle)

“Fulsome of beard, cynical of outlook and lyrical of rant, this is an outstanding introductory hour from Phil Jerrod, blending insightful, despairing wit with delightfully vivid flights of the imagination.” (The Scotsman)

Owners John Atkinson and Phil Walker picked Phil out from the many shows they saw at the Edinburgh Fringe last August. “We held our sides laughing for the whole hour,” said John of this eloquent comedian expressing frustration at the idiocies of mankind and society.

The aim is to attract top performers. Already lined-up, for December 11, is the North-East’s Gary Delaney with his machine-gun delivery of one-liners. The double Sony Award winner and Chortle Award nominee is a regular on BBC2’s Mock the Week as well as appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 7 Day Saturday, BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and BBC3’s Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live.

Then on January 22 David Trent, fresh from touring with the award-winning star of television Nick Helm, brings a high-octane audio-visual onslaught in his articulate and didactic style.

The list of current shows can be found on the café’s website, www.hemelvaart.co.uk which has a direct link to ticket sales. Tickets can also be bought in person from Hemelvaart Bier Café in Ayton. More info on 07968 359917.
