The Maltings’ much anticipated, brand new, massive digital cinema screen has been installed.

Given its length, it was carried down Eastern Lane and brought into the building through the side door of the Stage Door Bar then on into the Main House Theatre.

The screen was custom made to fit the theatre and is the final piece of kit for The Maltings digital cinema upgrade (which also includes Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, a Dolby digital server, and state-of-the-art NEC digital projector) .

The new screen is approximately two metres wider and over one metre taller than the old screen and will complete a dramatically improved audio and visual experience for audiences.

The digital cinema upgrade was made possible by Northumberland County Council who provided an Invest to Save grant of £60,000 to assist with the total cost of the £75,000.

The new screen has arrived in time for an exciting new era of programming for The Maltings, which launches on April 29 and includes live digital broadcasts by some of the greatest artistic companies in the world including the Royal Opera, Bolshoi Ballet, National Theatre and Opera Australia.

The Maltings are particularly excited to present a live digital broadcast of the National Theatre’s new hit, sold-out West End show, ‘The Audience’, starring Helen Mirren on June 13.

Head of marketing and film programming Tamiko Mackie said: “Since we launched our new digital cinema system on March 1, the feedback from the public has been amazing, especially with regards to the improved sound.

“The installation of the new screen further enhances a totally transformed audio and visual cinematic experience.

“We hope local audiences will share our excitement but most of all, come and enjoy seeing a film at The Maltings.”
