Swinging into the Borders this weekend will be jazz singer June James accompanied by local band Swing Street.

Performing together for the fourth year running, the ensemble will reunite at Whitsome Ark Village Hall to play a selection of big band and swing music.

Although originally from Paisley, June moved to Whitsome about eight years ago and loves singing in and around the Borders.

The two originally collaborated years ago when June discovered that Swing Street rehearsed in Coldstream and asked if they’d like to perform together. She explained, “We both have the same style and swing feel to our music, so it just made sense to do performances together and it works really well.”

Coming from a family who have a love for jazz and big band music, June definitely has music in her blood.

She said: “I remember as a teenager there would be band rehearsals going on in my living room because my dad and brother both played instruments and I was desperate to join in.”

Swing Street was originally formed around 16 years ago by Sandy Barclay, but when he moved away it was Remo who took a hold of the reins.

After having trombone lessons from Peter Robson, Remo went on to play for some big acts like Simply Red, Texas and Susie Quatro, making him more than capable.

There may only be six member in the ensemble, but for what they lack in numbers they more than make up for in volume and talent.

Remo said: “There’s always a fantastic atmosphere at these gigs. The past three years it’s been standing room only and hopefully this year will be the same.”

June and Swing Street will be playing some well-known classics such as ‘Sway’ and ‘Look of Love’ alongside two songs June has written herself titled ‘Here’s My Heart’ and ‘Reflections.’

Swing Street will play a few instrumental numbers such as ‘King of the Swingers’ to break up the set with Remo taking the lead with a trombone solo.
