A touch of old school Hollywood glamour will be sprinkled over Coldingham Hall Theatre tomorrow night when it hosts the launch of a special Herring Queen DVD.
The debut of ‘Eyemouth’s Crowning Glory’ will see the big screen filled with memories from Herring Queens past, dating right back to the crowning of first queen Mary Craig back in 1939.
Former queens will be bussed in from Eyemouth decked out in their finest dresses and will be greeted at the end of the red carpet by a piper from Eyemouth Pipe Band before enjoying a champagne reception and a specially prepared buffet.
It’s a case of if your names not on the list, you’re not getting in as the DVD launch is by invitation only and with 58 former queens alone, there should be standing room only when the film starts to roll.
The launch night itself might sound all glitz and glamour but in reality the project has been a massive slog for the Herring Queen committee, particularly secretary Elaine Peakman who edited decades of footage together.
“The ball really got rolling after last year’s crowning,” Elaine explained.
“But our first major stumbling block was that we had no central Herring Queen archive.
“Yes, there’d been exhibitions in the past but the items used in those had been given back to their owners.
“We were in the process of inviting past queens back for their 70th anniversary so they were our first port of call, then their maids, trainbearers etc.
“And after realising there were a few years still unaccounted for we put a call out to the public via our Facebook page and fortunately we had a great response.”
With piles and piles of archives at her finger tips, Elaine’s admitted her living room “became like a museum” for a while but cracked on with making a DVD fit for Eyemouth royalty.
“I downloaded an editing package and it was trial and error really but I think I got a bit of a dab hand at it by the end.
“I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out as it could have been a massive fail.
“As well as the queens there’s a tribute to Eyemouth lifeboat with a recording of ‘Highland Cathedral’ by the current crew. Every time I hear it with the footage I’m in tears.”
