RUGBY: Colin Young is set to replace Charlie Evans as the new Berwick backs coach for next season.
Evans has announced that he will be standing down at the end of the season due to work commitments at his dentistry practice.
“Charlie will be a huge loss,” said Berwick manager Owen Weatherhead. “He is a very good coach who is well respcected by the players. But he is expanding his practice and the time and effort that will take means he is unable to be as committed as he would like to be.”
A former captain of the Blacks, Young has spent the majority of his career at Berwick, save for one season at Melrose, and will take up a player-coach role next season, with responsibility for coaching the backs. Head coach Lawrence Patton remains in overall charge, with coaching responsibilities for the forwards.
Weatherhead added: “Colin will be a good replacement. He knows the club inside out and he will be flexible, so we will have all the bases covered for next season.”
Patton and Young will take charge of the Berwick squad for this weekend’s Hawick Linden Sevens. Although one or two players will be missing due to their participation in Berwick Cricket Club’s captain’s match on Saturday, the Blacks will travel to Hawick with the core of a good squad.
