Heriot-Watt University 3
ERIK Thomson’s stunning winner was the difference between the teams as Heriot-Watt University came from behind to edge out Coldstream at Home Park.
The home side had the better of the first half and led 1-0 thanks to another John Crawford goal. But Heriot-Watt scored twice when they were on top in the first 15 minutes of the second half. In his first game as captain, Crawford notched the equaliser before Thomson struck Heriot-Watt’s winner 20 minutes from time.
Craig Heugh’s quick feet and movement was causing the visiting defence problems, but it was Crawford who put Streamers ahead. Taking advantage of hesitation in the away defence, he was on the end of a Chris Taylor cross from the right, flicked on by Martin Cornish, to control and lob the visiting goalkeeper into the net midway though the first half.
The skipper missed a chance to grab a second, while Taylor had a header well saved.
At the other end, Under-19 goalkeeper Kerr McLernon, making his first-team debut in place of the suspended Mark Walters, could have been shown a red card when he handled just outside the box. But the referee let the teenager off with a yellow and the free-kick came to nothing and Coldstream went in at half time disappointed to be only one goal up.
The students equalised after half time through Banji Koya, who appeared to control with a hand before shooting home from 14 yards. Michael Connor then turned Cornish from a long throw to side-foot low past McLernon from an acute angle.
Streamers equalised when a soft-looking penalty was awarded for hand ball in the box. Even though Martyn Tait’s spot kick was saved, Crawford headed in the rebound.
With the tie in the balance, Heriot-Watt sealed victory when Thomson made space for himself 25 yards out and bent an unstoppable right-foot shot into the top corner. Coldstream pressed for an equaliser, Mark Bolton coming closest with a shot which was superbly saved by the goalkeeper, but the visitors held on.
