Magic Wands do it the hard way

GALA Wanderers rounded off a superb season with their first Jed Thistle sevens title in 11 years.

Having already been crowned Borders Semi-junior Sevens Series winners, the Maroons defeated Kelso Quins 45-12 in the final to finish on a high.

Wands were certainly in the tough half of the draw, having to defeat Selkirk Youth Club Sevens winners Melrose Wasps in the first round, then the Souters themselves in the quarter-finals.

Edinburgh BATS were thumped in the semis before Gala’s comfortable final win.

Results – First round: Gala Wanderers 28 Melrose Wasps 14; Haddington 0 Selkirk Youth Club 40; Jed Thistle B 10 Presidents 12; Edinburgh BATS 27 Peebles Colts 7; Langholm Colts 7 Hawick PSA 31; Hawick Wanderers 21 Kelso Quins 24; Duns Colts 15 Berwick Colts 31; Jed Thistle A 14 Tynedale Colts 17.

Quarter finals: Gala Wands 26 Selkirk YC 19; Presidents 6 Edinburgh BATS 54; Hawick PSA 14 Kelso Quins 26; Berwick Colts 12 Tynedale Colts 27.

Semi finals: Gala Wands 43 Edinburgh BATS 10; Kelso Quins 24 Tynedale Colts 21.

Final: Gala Wands 45 Kelso Quins 12.
