Bonus point win for Seconds puts them clear at top of the table

Duns 2nd XV38

Haddington 3rd XV18

WITH the Hardens unplayable and the First XV also at home, Duns Seconds had to play on the small pitch at the Berwickshire High School.

This proved to be a real inconvenience as the narrow pitch thwarted the seconds’ normal free running wide game.

Duns started the brighter ofb the two sides with two quick-fire tries from Martin Aitchison and Daniel Wright, both being converted by Craig Renton.

Haddington then responded with a well taken try from their burly prop Michael Burns (playing in an all-Duns front row for Haddington along with John Warren and Frazer Howie) who crashed over near the posts - this was converted.

This spurred Duns on, with tries coming from Dane Ivison and Nathan Chisholm. Both of the conversion attempts were narrowly missed.

Andrew Baxter then touched down with Renton converting well.

The visitors then staged a mini-comeback with a converted try closely followed by a penalty try after the referee deemed that the Duns defender had deliberately taken out the Haddington player in the act of scoring. The conversion was missed.

Stevie Crawford then closed off the game with a good try which Renton again converted.

This was a frustrating afternoon for the Seconds but it was nevertheless a bonus point win which leaves them well clear at the top of the league table.

There were some very good individual performances but a lack of togetherness overall.

Nathan Chisholm had a good afternoon with some strong running together with Martin Aitchison at number eight who was strong in the loose and had some good carries.

Next Saturday sees the seconds away to Dunbar.
