BERWICK are about to make another signing as they continue their build-up to the new season.
Manager Jimmy Crease confirmed this week that a deal had been struck with Chris Townsley, who is set to join the club from Spartans, where he was ‘Player of the Year’ last season.
The central defender, who previously played for Alloa, was also the East of Scotland ‘Player of the Year’ and is believed to have turned down an offer from Musselburgh Athletic, who reached the Scottish Junior Cup Final last season.
Crease said Townsley is under contract with Spartans until the end of July, but the Edinburgh club have agreed to release him and the Berwick gaffer said: “The paperwork still has to be completed, but I don’t anticipate any problems.”
Meanwhile, Berwick are also showing an interest in former East Fife, Alloa and Airdrie front man Stuart Noble.
The 27 year-old, who began his career with Premiership side Fulham in 2002, spent three years at Craven Cottage before returning north to join the Methill outfit.
Noble also had a spell with Gala Fairydean in the East of Scotland League before joining Airdrie in 2007, and he has spent the last two years with the Wasps at Recreation Park.
But Crease says that despite making him an offer, and having made several attempts to try and contact him since, he has heard nothing.
One player who looks increasingly unlikely to be returning, however, is goalkeeper Mark Peat.
“We made Mark an offer, but so far he has not got back to us and so as far as I am concerned that is it,” said Crease.
Confirmed signings for Berwick for the 2011-12 season include:
Ian McCaldon, Andy McLean, Chris McLeod, Chris Townsley, Elliot Smith, Richard Walker, David Greenhill, Fraser McLaren, Paul Currie, Lee Currie, Ian Little and Damon Gray.
Berwick began pre-season training on Tuesday but Crease was unable to attend because of other commitments.
“But I will be there on Thursday (tonight) and as we have several players in from other clubs to have a look at I will have a clearer indicatuion of how things are shaping up after that.”
