Work starts on new cycle track in Dunbar woods

WORK has started on £176,000 cycle fitness track in Lochend Woods at Dunbar.

The project, spearheaded by the Dunbar Community Woodland Group and Dunbar Cycling Group, attracted funding from Viridor Credits.

The pump track is a series of humps (rollers) and bermed corners over an area extending to 20 metres by 30 metres in the woods on the west side of Kellie Road.

The new facility, which is expected to be finished by the end of January, has been designed by local contractor Tree-ditions along with members of Dunbar Cycling Group and Dunbar Grammar School Cycling Club under the leadership of teacher Tom Fendick.

Riders have to use their whole bodies to ‘pump’ their bikes round the track which is training for mountain biking.

Organisers said the woodland track would compliment the trails being built by ‘Traprain Trails’ and the new Foxlake outdoor adventure centre.

Sustaining Dunbar has supported the project with help to make the funding application, carry out a public consultation and apply for planning permission. Dunbar Rotary Club is also making a contribution to the project as is Dunbar Community Council, on condition that supporting documentation is forthcoming from the woodland group’s parent body, Dunbar Community Development Company.
